Scan vs Superstition… The Gender Prediction Game.

Ok if you have the patience of a saint and can wait until birth to find out your babies’ gender that’s brill for you – but that is not the life for me. Heck I can’t even wait until my gender scan to find out... So, to make the waiting game a little more bearable I have decided to do a little scan vs superstition.

Let’s play a gender guessing game!

I have scoured the internet on a hunt for any 'old wives’ tales' or little at home predictions I can put to the test, so before I get my gender scan in a couple weeks, I’m going to put these superstitions to the test!

Full disclaimer needed here is that these at-home methods are not scientifically proven and should not replace professional medical advice- but hey if you deep it they do have a 50% chance of being right.

Ok let’s dive in, I am so excited!

The Nub Theory

This is used in the early stages of pregnancy, and it involves determining the gender based on the angle of the nub (the genital tubercle). If the angle of the nub is greater than 30 degrees, it is more likely to be a boy, and if it’s less than 30 degrees it is more likely to be a girl.

Result: by looking at my baby’s nub at 12 weeks nub theory suggests my baby will be a girl.

How is your skin looking?

Apparently if your skin is glowing and radiant during pregnancy you are having a boy but if you are experiencing any acne or skin issues it’s a girl – they do say a daughter steels the mothers beauty!

Results: My skin has been having more spots and very dry during this pregnancy so this one points towards a girl.

Look to your cravings.

Do you have any cravings? Are they sweet (so that can be chocolate, ice cream, sweeties, or fruits), if so then it is believed this indicates you’re having a girl, and if you are craving salty things (meat, crisps, pickles, cheese etc) then it is believed you’re having a boy.

Results: This is tricky because I have been craving fruit SO much this pregnancy, but I eat a lot of fruit in general but more so than normal I think, and I always have a sweet tooth so to be honest it is hard to say if it is down to pregnancy or just my preferences in general.

Chinese Gender Calendar

This is a way to predict the gender of your baby based on the ancient Chinese lunar calendar and is based around two concepts, the mother’s lunar conception month (the month when the baby was conceived) And  the mother’s Chinese lunar age (the age of the mother at the time of conception).

Results: Based on my age at conception (28), and conceiving the baby in November this system predicts a girl.

Baking Soda

Ok for this one you need to get a cup and add in a teaspoon of baking soda and then put some of your urine in it (what a delicious tasty treat right). If when you mix the two the mixture fizzes it is suggested that you are having a boy and if there is no reaction then you’re meant to be having a girl.

Results: There was no fizz so myth suggests I am having a girl.

The Ring Test

This is an old wives tale, and basically get a string, a piece of hair whatever you have to hand and your wedding/ engagement ring (note: it will only work with a wedding or engagement ring, if you don’t have either you can supposedly use your mothers wedding ring but I have not tried this myself to confirm if results are the same or not).

There are two ways to carry out this one but both have the same general principle- that if the ring sways side to side it is a boy and if it goes round in a circle it’s a girl.

Version 1 (hold ring and string above the Pregnant Belly):

Lie on your back, have your partner, family member, or friend hang the threaded ring above your belly and wait for the ring to move on its own.

Results: The ring went round and round suggesting that baby will be a girl.

Version 2 (Hold the threaded ring above your left hand)

Firstly rest the ring on your hand and then lift the ring up allowing it to swing in whatever direction it chooses. The ring should begin swinging either back and forth in a straight line (boy) or in a circle (girl).

This indicates the sex of your first-born child. Repeat the process to predict the sex of any further children and continue until the ring comes to a dead stop.

Results: Every single time the ring comes back saying boy, girl, girl... (and then it does boy again before stopping... but lets just pretend it stops after three babies for my sanity!) So myth suggests a girl on this one too!

Morning sickness

Some believe that if you are having bad morning sickness then it suggests that baby is a girl, however, if you are experiencing little to none then it suggests you’re having a boy.

Results: Holy sick is all I can say on this one!! The results are definitely pointing to a girl.

The scan

Today is the day of my scan. All of these predictions have come back saying girl, so, I guess it’s time to see if old wives tales have any truth in them or if they are in fact just tall tales.

We are having a GIRL!

I am beyond excited as my sisters are one of the most important things in the world to me and I would be at a loss without them, so I am so happy that I get to give Azalea the blessing of a little sister.

She is also so very excited – her brother… well I’m sure he will get there too. He wanted a brother so was a little disappointed.

It is so strange that all these superstitions all said that the baby would be a girl and it was in fact a girl, I mean ok, they had a 50% chance of being right but the fact they all said girl and were correct just seems a little too strange to be a coincidence?

It would be so fun to know if these work for anyone else, or if anyone is having a boy and their results say the opposite!
